Say Her Name by James Dawson

Author: James Dawson

Genre: Horror

Description: Drip…drip…drip…In five days, she will come…Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts. A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. They are ordered to summon the legendary ghost of Bloody Mary: say her name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and she shall appear…But, surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it? Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror – five days – but what does it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly weird and more terrifying for Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear that Bloody Mary was indeed called from the afterlife that night, and she is definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine are now in a race against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as she has come for countless others before…A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror from shortlisted ‘Queen of Teen’ author James Dawson

Star rating: 4.5/5

Hey everyone!

Now what I’m about to write is something completely different to what I thought I would be writing, contrary to my last post and my opinions about this book.

However, I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I read it today and finished it about 20 minutes ago and thought ‘Oh my God, I need to write something about this!’ So I did:). And here’s a brief description of this book;

It all starts on Halloween night, where best friends Bobbie and Naya, along with bad boy Caine, are dared to summon the ghost of Bloody Mary by their schoolmates. So they do, and they say it five times in front of a mirror…nothing happened.

Straight away.

They summoned something dark and dangerous with an immense amount of rage and a sense of revenge that is able to kill them all. She is deadly, and they’ve got to do something about it.

I don’t read books like this a lot, I’m usually the girlie Anna and the French Kiss or Clockwork Angel type. I absolutely loved it. At first, I didn’t really get into it but as soon as the action started, it was right up my street..a street I obviously never knew I had!

I think what I loved more about this book was the fact that yes it was supposed to be mainly Horror, but the author made sure that there were times where comedic relief was applied, and also, he added a sense of love which is very hard to do in such a deep, devouring book like this. I honestly had no clue what was going to happen at the end, I genuinely did not know where the ending would lead. *POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERTS, OR DEFIANTLY SPOILER ALERTS* The ending honestly played with my emotions, one minute I thought that they were all dead and there was no hope, the next minute I thought everything would be okay ,they all survived and Mary wasn’t a problem anymore, and THEN, just as everything was okay, there was an OH SHOOT moment for both us and Bobbie, and then the novel ended. Great.

I did actually enjoy this book a hell of a lot, and I’m still re-reading the end page and trying to come to terms with it… I just can’t.

Buy it. Now!!!!

Book tag and a massive apology

I am a poor excuse for a human being. Nearly 3 weeks I haven’t posted and I am so sorry! Things have been rubbish for me and this was the last thing on my mind, but now I kind of miss it!! Also,a little birdy told me to carry this on..(thanks gabanina).

Because it’s a Thursday,it’s supposed to be Teenage Thursday, but I’m gonna do something different.

I found a book tag online and I think it was created by someone called Meghan on Goodreads? FULL CREDIT GOES TO HER:). So here I go!!

1) Do you get sick whilst reading in the car?

Yeah,I’m so car/travel sick it’s unreal! I take travel sickness pills but I can’t read then because they make me go to sleep, which sucks!!

2) Which authors writing style is completely unique to you,and why?

I honestly think James Dashner(author of The Maze Runner series)has a very unique style. He leaves a cliffhanger after almost every chapter and I don’t usually see that in any other books.

3) Harry Potter series or Twilight Saga? Give three points to defend your argument.

THIS ISNT FAIR. Umm, Harry Potter?! 1) Magical and has wands, 2) Mrs Weasley is sassy, 3) the books are so detailed..(Twilight fans don’t hate me, I do love Twilight too!)

4) Do you smell your books?

…No, I don’t…but I kind of want to now because this question is here..*smells all books*.

5) Books with or without illustration?

Without, because I love imagining the scenarios and characters in my head, and I feel if I have illustrations there it affects my view towards the character.

6) What book did you love whilst reading, but discovered later it wasn’t quality writing?

If I am 100% honest, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. I love John Green and I love TFIOS, but I re read it and realised it didn’t really have a lot of detail towards the characters. After reading his other books, eg. Paper Towns, Looking For Alaska, they are better written than TFIOS. I love the story line and I love the movie, but I just don’t really like how little he described the characters.

7) Do you have any memories involving books?

I have a main memory but it’s so weird…when I was five or six, my sister was being all moody. As a joke, my mum said “hit her over the head with a book Bethan”. So there’s the five year old me, and I’m grabbing Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, and I hit my sister over the head with it because I thought my mum was being serious!! I didn’t hit her hard, literally a tap!! But she decided to throw it at me when I was half asleep…I don’t think she had a good day.

8) What’s the thinnest book on your shelf?

The thinnest book I own is Romeo and Juliet. I don’t know if it counts as a book because it’s sort of a play script, but it’s written as a book. I think it’s only about 150 pages long.

9) What’s the thickest book on your shelf?

The thickest book I own is City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare. It’s over 700 pages long(I read it in five hours…just saying)

10)Do you write as well as read?

I used to write, but I honestly don’t think I’m any good at it, so I’m a full reader.

11) When did you get into reading?

I’ve always loved reading, but I think Year 6 was when I got into it properly. The teachers always used to give me books and it sort of escalated from there…I got loads of books and wasted my parents money on them-I still do that.

12) What’s your favorite classic book?

I don’t know if this is a classic book, but probably Of Mice and Men? It’s quite a good book, but I don’t know if it counts as a classic. If it doesn’t, then I don’t have a favorite classic book.

13)In school, is your best subject English?

I like to think it is, but whether my English teacher agrees to this, then I don’t know.

14)If you were given a book as a present that you once read and hated, what would you do with it?

I would still put it on my bookshelf, the more books the better. I don’t think that would happen though, I don’t generally hate any books.

15)What is a lesser known series which is similar to The Hunger Games and Harry Potter?

I don’t know if it’s well known or not, but probably the Angel Trilogy by L.A Weatherly(the book trilogy review is on my blog). It is honestly an amazing series and I highly recommend to everyone.

16)What is a bad habit you always do(besides rambling)when blogging?

I read every word out loud, then I’m like “nonono THIS sounds better”, and I’ll keep re reading it out-loud.

17)What is your favorite word?

At the moment, it’s ‘aesthetic’-I love that word.

18)Are you a nerd, dork or a dweeb?

I don’t know what those two words mean, so I will say NERD.

19)Vampires or fairies?

I’m gonna say fairies, because the Lament series by Maggie Stiefvater is beautiful.

20)Shapeshifters or werewolves?

Both. I love Shapeshifters because of Tessa in Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare(review on my blog),and I love Werewolves because of the Shiver series by Maggie Stiefvater.

21)Spirits or Werewolves?

Werewolves. I’ve never read books about Spirits?

22)Shapeshifters or Angels?

Shapeshifters, purely because of Tessa Gray. But if you asked about half angels, it would be a different answer.

23)Love Triangle or Forbidden Love?

Forbidden Love. Only because I feel that a love triangle is being so over used, I want different things for a change. A good forbidden love series is Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini.

24)Full on romance, or action with some romance?

Because I’m going through a stage where I hate all romance(boy trouble),I’m gonna say I would want the action one, but less love scenes.

25) Book your currently reading?

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.

This took so long to write!! I hope you liked this and I will write more, I promise!!
